HB548: District 60 to Host Finance Information Sessions

02/19/2021

HB548 establishes a financial oversight committee for Waukegan School District 60

What is financial oversight?
A financial oversight committee is comprised of local community members appointed by the State Board of Education(educators, business owners, parents, etc.) and works with the school administration and the school board to ensure that expenditures are in the best interest of the students, teachers and families in the district.

Bill Genesis
This bill is a Constituent request. It was filed in response to multiple requests from taxpayers, parents, teachers, board members and other school personnel for the IL State Board of Education to step in and oversee the finances of the school district. The requests were made following the purchase of a new building in downtown Waukegan using education dollars as well as several high paid administrative hires amid cuts to teaching positions and educational programs.

Per my request, the Waukegan Board of Education will conduct two virtual Finance Information Sessions, where the district’s finance team will present an overview of the district’s finances and answer any questions parents, teachers, staff and the community may have. It is my hope that my constituents will receive the answers they seek and that the district will establish a communication platform going forward.

Virtual meetings are scheduled for:
• February 18 at 6:00 p.m.
• February 22 at 1:00 p.m.

You can join our sessions via GoToMeeting, by clicking here. There is also an option to dial in using your phone by calling (872) 240-3212, and entering access code: 740-672-333. Spanish audio of the meeting can be accessed by dialing (571) 317-3129, and entering access code: 839-505-645, when prompted.

Our finance sessions will be moderated by Mr. Marvin Bembry Sr., President, of MKB Leadership Transformation. In advance of these sessions, we are accepting questions relating to financial controls or budgeting. Those questions can be submitted here. We ask that all questions be submitted at least 24 hours prior to meetings, to allow staff time to thoroughly respond.
