Good News for a Waukegan Student and State Rep. Mayfield.

Students' Letter Wins School Supplies for Cooke Magnet

Press Release: 02-23-2012

A Cooke student's plea to a local legislator for increased school funding has earned her school a sizable donation of school supplies.

Jazzmyn Guzman, a second grader in Ms. Julie Ahern's class, was recently selected as one of two winners in the National Handwriting Day Contest sponsored by Pentel of America and Kids in Need Foundation. The contest encouraged students to write letters to their legislators explaining why school funding is crucial to them and their classmates.

In her letter to former Waukegan School Board member, and current State Representative, Ms. Rita Mayfield, Jazzmyn urged for increased funding for education so she and her classmates can have nicer classroom furniture and more paper and pencils.

As a winner, Jazzmyn's school will be awarded $2,500 in Pentel supplies. Despite its name, the contest did not focus on penmanship, but rather on the message in each student's letter. National Handwriting Day was the stimulus for the contest, as a way to encourage students to hand write letters.
