Rep.Mayfield to Begin Work on Balanced Budget After Governor's Address

SPRINGFIELD - State Rep. Rita Mayfield (D-Waukegan) is hopeful following Governor Quinn's budget address today that the state will find ways to make cuts in a way that will not punish its most needy citizens, but will instead focus on eliminating programs that are abused and neglected.

"This is just the beginning of our budget process," Mayfield said. "We have a lot of work ahead of us and we are going to have to make some extremely difficult decisions, however, I am hopeful that we can work together in a bipartisan effort to protect our most vulnerable residents in the midst of these difficult economic times."

In the Governor's address, he laid out the need for cuts and reforms in the state budget to programs such as Medicaid, the need for adequate pension reform measures and for the closing of state facilities such as the Tamms supermax prison. His budget outline also included the need to consolidate many state facilities and programs to reduce headcount, leases and maintenance costs.

After last year's budget address, the Illinois House Appropriations committees each went through the Governor's budget line by line to identify waste and inefficiencies as well as prioritize funding within each state department. By doing that, nearly an additional $2 billion was cut from the original budget proposal.

"We know that cuts need to be made and we are ready to take on those difficult tasks, but we need to all be on the same page and willing to work together to ensure that what we do is in the best interests of our constituents," Mayfield said. "While in Springfield and in the district, I plan on discussing these cuts with the residents of the district as well as local officials, non-profits, community groups and everyone else that relies on the state to conduct their services. We know that no stone can be left unturned, but we also need to make sure that we are not making these cuts on backs of the people that need our services the most."
